PBP 2027: pacing, cutoffs, and how to know if you'll make it
Paris-Brest-Paris isn't won or lost on fitness alone — it's won or lost on the clock. Here's what the qualification and cutoff structure actually means for your pacing, and how to get a realistic finish-time estimate before you're standing at a control at 3am.
The basics
PBP 2027 departs Rambouillet on August 22, 2027 — 1,200 km to Brest and back, with a strict time limit depending on your start wave: roughly 80, 84, or 90 hours. To start, you need to complete the full Super Randonneur qualifying series — 200, 300, 400 and 600 km ACP brevets — between November 2026 and June 30, 2027. Pre-registration opens progressively from January 16, 2027, based on the longest brevet you rode in 2026 — so riding a longer qualifier earlier gets you a better registration slot.
Why cutoffs — not distance — are the real test
1,200 km sounds like the challenge, but most riders who don't finish PBP aren't beaten by the distance — they're beaten by the clock at a control. Controls at PBP are far busier than a regular brevet: queues for stamps, food and sleeping spots can eat 30–45 minutes that a smaller event wouldn't cost you. A pacing plan that only accounts for riding speed and ignores realistic stop time will look fine on paper and fall apart at control three.
How to plan your time in hand
The safer approach is to work backwards from the cutoffs, not forwards from your hoped-for average speed:
- Start from a conservative moving-time estimate — not your best-case pace. Route planners and GPX elevation data disagree with each other by 10–20% on rolling terrain, so a single number from one tool is not a plan.
- Add real stop time per control — food, queues, kit changes — not a flat percentage guessed once and forgotten.
- Decide your sleep strategy in advance. How many hours, where, and on which night — not as a decision made exhausted at a control.
- Build in buffer before the tightest control, not just at the finish. The cutoff that catches people is rarely the final one.
